Did you know this remarkable fish-stone is a key element of a beautiful legend of Lombok Island? Discover Medana Bay’s Magic and the ‘Whispering Wisdom’ of Mendana. A timeless message about life, growth, and harmony.
MENDANA, THE HUMBLE FARMER
Generations have whispered tales of the animal-shaped stones and Mendana, a humble farmer blessed with extraordinary healing powers. At Medana Bay, where he lived, Mendana was revered as a guardian of both land and people. People from far and wide visited him for his remarkable ability to mend ailments and soothe troubled hearts.
But as Mendana’s time on earth drew to a close, he imparted his wisdom to his relatives, teaching them the ways of harmony and compassion. Before his passing, he spoke of strange stones that would appear in the ocean after his departure, each carrying a message of hope and renewal.
True to his words, after Mendana’s death, at least two stones emerged from the depths: one shaped like a cow, symbolising strength and the ability to endure challenges. And the other one fashioned into the likeness of a fish. Both animal-shaped stones, believed to have emerged from the ocean after Mendana’s passing, and have both it’s own lesson about life, strength, and resilience.
FISH-SHAPED STONE
Glimmering in the tides, the fish-shaped stone in front of The Lombok Lodge Boutique Hotel, embodies the wisdom of fluidity and change, teaching us that life is like the ocean and always in motion.
>It reminds us that while the currents may change and challenges may arise, true wisdom lies in embracing the ebb and flow of life with grace and love.
#EMBRACE CHANGE AND FLOW WITH LIFE
Just as the tides ebb and flow, so do the challenges and triumphs in life. Lombok’s Whispering Fish Stone, visible only when the tides are low, reflects this truth. The wisdom here is that we must be adaptable, just as the ocean’s waters constantly shift. Life is full of transitions, and true strength lies in accepting these changes with grace.
#HEALING AND COMPASSION
Mendana, the healer, whispers through the gentle waves, inviting us to listen to our hearts and nurture not just our bodies, but also our souls. The story goest that the wisdom here is about compassion. Not only toward others but also toward ourselves. Healing comes from embracing kindness, patience, and self-care, knowing that, just like the ocean, we are constantly ebbing, flowing, and renewing.
#RENEWAL AND HOPE
Lastly, the story of Mendana and his mystical fish stone teaches that after every storm, there is calm, and after every loss, there is renewal. The fish stone is a symbols of hope, reminding us that no matter how turbulent life may seem, there is always the potential for new beginnings.
MAKAM MEDANA
Today, Mendana’s spirit lives on not in the animal-shaped stones and the beautiful surrounding Medana Bay, but also in the Makam Medana, where he was laid to rest. Locals believe the area of Makam Medana carries his energy, and visitors come to pay respects at his tomb, honoring his legacy as a healer and wise teacher.
The Makam Medana is the tomb of Raden Wira Dana, the Guardian of Compassion. It is a revered site visited by people from across North Lombok, regardless of religion. Pilgrims of Islam, Hinduism, and Buddhism come to this sacred resting place. It is located just a five-minute walk from The Lombok Lodge Boutique Hotel.
Raden Wira Dana is known for his generous spirit and his expertise in spiritual knowledge. His legacy has transformed the Makam Medana into a place of interreligious unity. A liminal space where all religious, social, and cultural identities blend together. Here, the distinctions between rich and poor, young and old, and different faiths and beliefs are no longer visible. The tomb of Medana stands as a powerful symbol of harmony. A place where differences fade and only shared reverence for this sacred site remains.
